Project Case Study: Nugent House School

Nugent House School is the North West’s leading school for boys aged 7-19 with emotional behaviour and mental health needs, providing specialist therapeutic residential and educational support.

They needed a website that gave parents all of the information they needed when making the important decision of what school to send their child to. The site needed to be informative and give an accurate view of what life as a Nugent House School pupil would be like, whilst having clear navigation and responsive design to create the best possible experience for users.

As a part of this, the website had to adhere to Ofsted and government guidelines with its content.

Mashbo stepped in to design and develop a responsive website that allows Nugent House School to meet these guidelines and provide a seamless, informative experience for parents.

Approach

We delivered a fully responsive website which serves as a platform for Nugent House School to meet their governed regulations and also provide parents with relevant, easy-to-find information that helps them.

A school’s website is a huge part of how they communicate with parents of both existing and potential pupils. Not only does the website need to provide relevant, accurate information but also represent the school’s values and ethos correctly.

To ensure this happened, we did our research and got to the core of Nugent House School’s values of providing the best quality care and education to their pupils, and supporting them to achieve their full potential.

We translated these values through seamless and clear design, using high quality imagery and consistent brand colours to tie the site together and keep it consistent with the school’s image.

The website is accessible from any device, ensuring users have a positive experience, whether they’re visiting the website from a desktop computer or a mobile phone. This also means quick information like term times or staff contact details can be accessed easily by parents who are on-the-go.

We understood that the requirements for developing a school’s website comes with many differences to other sectors that we’ve worked with. By law, every local authority maintained school must publish specific information on its website in compliance with The School Information (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2012. This includes exam results, term dates, behaviour policy and school values and ethos.

To address this, we built a site managed by WordPress Content Management System (CMS) to allow the Nugent team to constantly update the site with up-to-date information that meets the regulations. Any changes in the legislation can easily be implemented on the website for years to come as the Nugent team have the ability to update and edit content whenever necessary.

We have provided Nugent House School with the platform to meet government criteria, as well as meaning they can also add more entertaining content such as case studies.

The clear navigation and defined sections mean that legally required information has a logical place on the site, meeting government guidelines and also meaning users find what they’re looking for quickly. Working through the guidelines, we made sure that the site had a home for every part of legally required content. We build the website to accommodate each of the following, legally required criteria.

It wasn’t all about government regulations though – for us and the Nugent House School team the website was focused on helping site visitors find what they were looking for without hassle, and to have the best possible experience when using the site.

The website also adheres fully with WCAG AA Standard accessibility guidelines, meaning users have a consistently positive experience regardless of ability level.

Overall, the site has both a consistent design that represents the care and time devoted to each of Nugent House School’s pupils, and a clear content layout that meets government guidelines and helps parents find what they’re looking for easily. We have provided Nugent House School with a platform which will allow them to deliver the best possible digital support to all of their pupils and their parents.

We loved working with Nugent House School, a key pillar of Nugent’s invaluable work supporting those in need, and developing a digital platform for them to offer the best in education and residential support to every one of their pupils.
